Safeguarding

Safeguarding our school community is of paramount importance. We ensure that all our staff are aware of, and have the skills to deal with, any child protection or safeguarding concerns.

Safeguarding and child protection is everyone’s responsibility.

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.

Safeguarding means:

  • preventing harm to children's health or development

  • ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care

  • taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.

What is Child Protection?

Child Protection is part of Safeguarding and promoting welfare. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, significant harm.

Safeguarding concerns

All staff log any concerns on an online system called ‘My Concern’. DSL’s review the concerns and action accordingly.  Record of concern forms are available at the school office if required by any visitors/volunteers.

Training

All staff receive annual safeguarding refresher training.  All staff are required to read and sign to say they have read Keeping Children Safe in Education and the school Child Protection and Safeguarding policies and other relevant documents at the beginning of the academic year. The Safeguarding Committee meets weekly to discuss concerns and safeguarding is a standing agenda item at weekly Senior Leadership Meetings, Staff Meetings and Teaching Assistant meetings.

Safer Recruitment

The Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Assistant Headteachers have completed the Safer Recruitment training and at least one trained member of staff is always present during interviews. Safeguarding questions are always asked during an interview.

Visibility

Throughout the school site there are safeguarding posters indicating who to report safeguarding concerns too.

Visitors

All visitors must sign in at the office and wear ID’s around the school site. Regular volunteers have an initial induction meeting with a DSL where safeguarding and confidentiality is discussed.  Adults without a DBS are never left on their own with pupils.

Please refer to First Tower’s Child Protection Policy & Safeguarding Policy for further information.

Children and Family Hub and Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)

When necessary, we refer safeguarding concerns to the Children and Family Hub or MASH team. We do this either over the phone or using the online form.  If we were ever concerned about the immediate safety of a child, then the police would be called.  Parents are informed when we make a referral to the Hub or MASH team unless we feel this knowledge would put the child at further risk of harm.

Please see the information below for more information about MASH (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub).

Early Help

The Early Help Approach has been developed to identify the needs and strengths of a child or young person and their family, ensuring they and their families get the right help at the right time. Early Help is normally used when a child or young person could benefit from extra support. It may be that you as a parent have asked for extra support, or it may be that an agency working with your child or family suggests that extra help could be useful. The sooner an Early Help Assessment is started the quicker you, your child and the agencies working with you can explore how best to support your child and family. Your child and family are at the centre of the Early Help process but there are others that could be involved such as your health visitor, youth worker, parenting worker or any other agency working with your child and family.
